The
mission of the Canine Response Unit (CRU) is to provide a coordinated canine
response to critical incident helping to minimize the potential for injury
or loss of life to civilians, officers, or suspects. The Canine Response Unit
(CRU) consists of nine K-9 teams from FIAT agencies.
Levels
of canine response available:

Level One: Two canine teams will be activated
·
Level Two: Three canine teams will
be activated
·
Level Three: Four canine teams will be activated
·
Level Four: Five canine teams
will be activated
·
Level Five: All
available canine teams will be activated
CRU
provides canine teams ready to respond 24 hours a day to high-risk critical
incidents. A criteria has been established of the types of high-risk incidents
the unit can be activated for. High-risk incidents are defined as any forcible
felonies involving a weapon or high-risk searches involving public and officer
safety.
The following are some examples of the team’s
areas of expertise that can be called upon: area searches, perimeter support,
tracking, building
searches, high-risk apprehension, crowd control, special assignments, SWAT
support, explosive detection, cadaver detection, and missing persons.
Felony Investigative Assistance Team (FIAT) is
a multi-jursictional Police Taskforce based in DuPage County, Illinois.
The taskforce has fifteen member Police Departments in DuPage County. FIAT
four taskforce teams: Accident Reconstruction, Canine (K-9) Response Unit,
Major Crimes and SWAT
